Black Maria Gallery
October 20 - November 10
Opening Reception: Saturday October 20, 7:00 - 10:30
Apparently, the title of this exhibition was inspired by a song by the punk group “Gogol Bordello” and is intended to be an “homage to a particular facet of the immigrant experience”. Gallery director Zara Zeitountsian attempts to draw a parallel between punk and immigration, saying “Punk music and art do not pertain strictly to a specific cultural movement that exploded in the 1970’s and continued to evolve on the fringe……Rather, punk is a certain attitude and way of seeing that doesn’t necessarily come with props and a mohawk. It’s about the exuberance and joy of rejecting limitations and doing one’s own thing, of following the call of an inner rhythm and bringing one’s own style to the mosh pit.”
I love when curators show a real interest in cultural phenomena and have the brains to be able to relate that to artistic expression in a context beyond the fashion. I have often pondered on the obvious draw that not only punk, but hip hop have on the immigrant community; and how in light of the necessity to assimilate, a subcultural movement based in self expression must be very attractive. Kudos to Zeitountsian for approaching such a relevant and interesting theme.
The exhibiton will feature new and recent works by a number of local and international artists. While not all participating artits are immigrants, most could identify with the immigrant experience through the style and inspiration of their work;.
