I heart The Short Stop.
However, whenever I go, my stops are never short. I like to close down bars; what can I say?
Judging by name, you’d think that this was an all American Sports bar where you could come and hang with “the boys” while your women are at home frying chicken. You know, the type of place that only serves beer and peanuts are plentiful. Almost like being at the game for real. However, The Short Stop is anything but; it’s a hipster dive bar in Silverlake, but I’d still take my Dad there.
It’s difficult to find this hole in the wall for the first time. No where does it actually specify that it is, in fact, the place you Mapquested. It’s literally a plain black building on a shady street with a neon pink sign that simply says, “Cocktails.” The sign says it all.
A fair warning, if you don’t arrive early, parking can quickly become a headache, unless you park in their “parking lot.” I use that term loosely because it consists of you paying some guy $4 to haphazardly park your car in an old gas station. Classy.
I’ve also been warned that on weekends you might have to wait in an obnoxious line. I have personally never encountered a wait time, but it’s always possible. But even if you happen to get stuck in a line, I’d say stick it out. This bar is worth the wait.
Once inside, you’ll immediately be taken in by the long bar that consumes a majority of the room. The lights are just low enough to blot out facial blemishes and make you look like a rock star. You’ll probably want to get a drink before you take a lap around the joint, which features a few different rooms. I have read other reviews that complain about negligent bartenders that take forever to take your order, but again, I have never experienced this. My only criticism is that the drinks aren’t strong enough….or maybe I need to reevaluate my tolerance.
Once you have your beverage in hand, take a peek onto the dance floor and see if the disco ball is going and the DJ is spinning. The dance floor is usually dead before 11:30pm, because it takes a while for people to drink enough to get groovy. If the dance scene isn’t happening yet, then head on over to the “game room,” as I like to call it. There’s a huge pool table, pin ball machines, and a photo booth, which is perfect if you come with a larger group of friends.
Here on a quasi-date situation? Then head towards the back where you can talk in a quiet nook with bar-stools. Just beyond that is the narrow alleyway designated for those who need a smoke.
Overall the vibe is hip, and draws a nice blend of people. Everyone is super nice and friendly….even the local East LA emo kid who hates his Dad.
