I know, I know, when you think of Los Feliz’s Fred 62, you probably envision drunken hipsters wolfing down french fries and strawberry milkshakes at two a.m. on a Wednesday. You think of hot waitresses with fishnets and short skirts, their piercings glinting under the florescent lights. And, yes, that Fred 62 is valid. But, my Fred 62 is different. It’s the diner over-run with cute kids and dogs on a Sunday afternoon. It’s blasting 80’s music to old people early on a Saturday morning, way before the average Silverlaker is even out of bed. Both Fred 62s are awesome. Yours and mine. Because at both, you can order the punk tart.

Ah, the punk tart. A homemade pop tart that makes my mouth water as I type this. As big as my head with frosting an inch thick, stuffed with either pumpkin or apple filling. A rare treat, indeed. In it’s own category of awesomeness, perfect in every way. There is something at once familiar and exotic about this yummy square of goodness, conjuring up memories of mornings before Junior High School. Breakfast to go. A brilliant discovery wrapped in a paper towel to take on the bus. Fred 62’s punk tarts are like pop tarts would be if they were actually good. You know, if your grandma made them instead of Kelloggs. Yes, the burgers there are great. Yes, the pancakes are superior. And, okay, their onion rings don’t suck. But where else in town can you get a freaking pop tart that doesn’t come in a box? Just do it. Go get a punk tart. Get one for dinner. You rebel. You awesome rebel, you.

I will witness to the awesomeness of said punk tarts. I get them every time I am in LA, and have even bought them for the plane trip home. Thanks for the fun article!
