Fire Damage: To live and breathe in LA

November 28th, 2007 Written by: Kendra· 4 Comments

Air Quality-07-11-27I hate to drive. Maybe it’s un-Angeleno for me to say that but driving is the worst part of living in this city. That’s why I moved to Los Feliz. I wanted to walk to the supermarket and the post office. I needed to be able to go out to dinner without having to hop in my car afterwards and worry about if the jackass in the Hummer on his Bluetooth was going to kill me or not. I love my neighborhood simply for the sheer pleasure of being able to walk to Coffee Bean! But, lately, all that has changed. Ever since the fires started, I’m having trouble breathing. And, breathing, as you know, is essential to walking.

My terrible allergies are pretty obvious to anyone who knows me. A well-meaning friend once told me that I would not be alive if it weren’t for modern medicine. So, I know I’m a hyper-sensitive freak, but, this is ridiculous. I’ve been sick off and on for over a month. When at one point it turned into a sinus infection, the doctor I went to joked that I was the ‘girl in the bubble’. Thanks, dude. Tell me something I’ve never heard before. Don’t you have any jokes that aren’t references to cheesy John Travolta movies from the 80’s? (Or was it the 70’s?)

Last week, I enjoyed a small respite from air filled with crap. I danced a jig of joy only to wake up Friday morning sniffing and sneezing, with watery eyes. I shuffled into the living room and whined to my husband, “There’s something in the air I must be allergic to. I feel awful.” He then informed me that there were fires in Malibu. Again. Can’t an allergy-ridden chic get a break?

The air in L.A is much more dangerous than people think right now. I look forward to the end of fire season. I want to breathe outside without it hurting. I want to walk out my door without having to remember the Kleenexes. If only it weren’t so hard to breath in L.A…

If you suffer from allergies and have been effected by the fire’s, here is a site that lets you know the quality of the air in your area and if you might be in danger.

We haven’t been feeling right for the past month or so either. Looking forward to going back to the normal, bad air quality - at least it snuck up on you instead of making you feel bad instantly.

Well, to be accurate, what I said was, “If it weren’t for modern medicine, you would have been weeded out of the gene pool long ago.” Hope you feel better.

people in malibu should build their houses out of rice paper. its a very clean burning material. that way, there would be alot less toxins in the air when they inevitably burn down.
