i am legendCrewest art gallery located in downtown Los Angeles, recently held a competition sponsored by the new movie “I Am Legend” to determine who is the best graffiti artist in the city. The contestants would be battling it out on canvas for a cash prize of $1200 dollars. The city of Los Angeles was generous enough to close off a one block section in front of the gallery to allow artists to paint in the streets.

A mixed crowd of families, teenagers, and artsy types were in attendance. Many people unaware of the contest who wandered past the road blocks, stopped and stared at all the amazing art being created before their eyes. Artist’s used a combination of spray paint, stencils, and various brushes to complete their detailed works.

Well known local deejay, d.j. E.S.P was on hand to provide an interesting mix of music for the artists and onlookers to vibe to. Female artists ritzyperiwinkle and JeyD held their own against the mostly male field. Graffiti artist Tazroc won the competition with his realistic portrait of “I Am Legend” star Will Smith. Along with the cash prize, his winning work will be displayed on the walls of the Crewest gallery.
