Yesterday afternoon, Oprah’s Favorite Things 2007 show re-aired. Although not normally an Oprah disciple, I did get sucked right in by the spectacle of grown women crying over free camcorders and thanking Jesus for Kitchenaide mixers. This made me think about what items would be on my list. Because I want to feel self-important like Oprah and because food is what makes me cry for joy, I present to you Kendra’s Favorite Things to Eat In LA.
Black and White Cookies from Canter’s Deli. (419 N. Fairfax Ave.)These are so delicious we served them at our wedding right alongside the cake. Actually, my mother stole one, wrapped it in a napkin and stuffed it in her purse for the plane ride home. Seriously. They’re big and cakey with a hint of lemon, chocolate frosting on one side, vanilla on the other. Oh. My. Gawd.Gelato at Al Gelato. (806 S Robertson Blvd.)
Oh, Al Gelato. (806 S Robertson Blvd.) Delicious is not a good enough word to describe the creamy goodness. They have over 70 flavors here. You can get a scoop and then a taster on top (for free) of another flavor! There is actual food food here but go for the gelato. It shames every other place in town.
Zucchini Fries at Astro Burger. (5601 Melrose Ave.)For your convenience, they have put an Astro Burger on Melrose, probably near where you will end up at the end of a night of holiday partying. Go and order the zucchini fries. They come in a basket bigger than your buzz. You can dip them in ranch. Greasy, crunchy, yummy goodness…better than any french fry you’ve ever put in your head. Proven to reduce hangovers.
Breadsticks at Prizzi’s. (5923 Franklin Ave)Shout out to my pals, Dan and Edi for introducing this amazing appetizer to me. Even though these things are gigantic, order the full order because you wouldn’t want to get in a fight over the last one. It happens, trust me. They’re chewy and coated in this incredible buttery garlic parmesan stuff that might make you lose your mind. In a good way. Like Sting, not like Britney.
Snake Bite at Finn McCool’s. (2702 Main Street) Yes, this is technically not food but it still makes the list because it certainly has enough calories to be a food. Okay, that’s a lame argument, but the Snake Bite is just so perfect. Finn McCool’s in Santa Monica makes such a good one. Half lager, half cider….crisp and slightly sweet but still like beer all contained in a tall, frosty glass that makes you glad to be alive. Grab a stool at this gorgeous bar and have a Snake Bite. Do it for your country! But, be careful, with more alcohol content than your average pint, you’ll get wasted quicker than usual. And, it’s quite a drive to Astro Burger from here.
Brie BLT at Madame Matisse. Freakin’ brilliant. They took a classic BLT and inserted brie. A sandwich cannot get better than this. Beyond scrumptious, the BBLT consists of applewood smoked bacon, tomatoes and some incredibly creamy brie slapped in between two thick slices of multigrain bread. Worth the twenty minute wait you’ll have to get a table at this tiny place. My husband calls this sandwich ‘delightful’, which for him is like throwing his hands up in the air and thanking Jesus for a mixer.
So, there you have it. Try them all, but not all at once. That would just be crazy. Britney crazy, not Sting Crazy. Take that, Oprah!
