Scoring: Buying Pot in LA is Too Easy

December 14th, 2007 Written by: Jeff Barrick· 2 Comments

Medical Marijuana I’m not alone in my appreciation for all things green. Weed sales in Los Angeles are in the high millions and steadily growing every year. If you have a medical card (as I do) then ready access to all the marijuana a person could ever want is literally right at your fingertips. I must say though, I do miss the old days, when you had to stop by your friendly neighborhood pot dealers place if you wanted some smoke.

Are they just going to legalize pot for everyone already and end the charade? There is no shortage of available weed and the market appears to be never ending, let’s tax this shit and spend the money on AIDS research or on child cancer. It’s clear Angelinos are smoking as much as they’re drinking, we might as well funnel out those big time vice dollars into something beneficial to someone other then pot dealers.

Inside a club I remember when I got my card; it felt like I was legal. I could walk into a shop and feel no fear. Unlike a traditional dealer, you may know the guy very well but the whole thing still feels a little awkward. A marijuana clinic feels like an indy coffee shop, just a bit greener. It’s all very professional, and seems like it makes complete sense. As if marijuana has always been legal, and you’ve been coming here for years to pick up your prescription. After a few weeks at a clinic you’ll laugh at the idea of going to some guys house and waiting outside, then calling his cell, and waiting for him to come out and deliver your goodies. It’s so shady to force people to conduct business that way.

The Plant

Street drugs produce the majority of petty crimes and these lead to all sorts of socio-economic problems. There are a variety of very serious drugs that have taken hold of Los Angeles and the United States as a whole. Marijuana should be the least of their worries, yet billions of dollars are wasted each year combating a drug, which now I can walk into a posh LA clinic and pick up with less hassle than booze at the supermarket. What is wrong with this picture?

I don’t believe in “Gateway Drugs” and I don’t give any thought to the dangers of pot use. Slap an age limit on it, like alcohol and you’re set. It isn’t anymore dangerous or harmful than smoking a pack of Cool’s and having a scotch and soda. If you’re a mature adult, then I’m sure you are making responsible choices in regards to what goes into your body. So what business is it of mine?

Medical Card As a final note I am not suggesting pot is for everyone because no vice is for everyone, but as vices go, pot has gotten an extremely bad wrap and speaking from first hand account, a room full of stoners is usually accompanied by loud laughter and joyous singing, while a room full of drunks is usually followed by the sound of police sirens and the screams of angry women. I may be giving you a slanted opinion, but aren’t all opinions slanted in one way or another.

I live in the Netherlands, where cannabis is legal, there are marijuana shops everywhere, and the fact is, here, most people never smoke.
And people who smoke, are not abusing it, they just do it like they would drink alcohol, to have fun.
And the criminality is not high, neither is the rate of hard drugs usage.
So let’s stop this hypocrisy and let’s legalize it, as you said, we’d better use the taxes for something useful.
