L.A.’s Top Movie Theaters

December 15th, 2007 Written by: Karl· 1 Comment

MOvie theater-07-12-12The film industry’s history within LA runs deep, so its only fitting that LA has numerous ways of experiencing the latest release. From a multiplex to a single movie house, taking in one of Hollywood’s latest can be a fun experience or one you later regret. The crowd, the food, the overall mood, and the movie itself all contribute to your experience. While LA has plenty of theaters to offer, these are my top three.

1. The Landmark Theater (West Los Angeles)
Showtimes: (310) 281-8233 • Information: (310) 470-0492
10850 West Pico at Westwood Blvd. Map
I know. How can I put a multiplex at the top of this list? Simple. Going beyond a typical multiplex experience, the Landmark theaters keep you coming back, not because of the movies shown, but because of how you see them. True, it has the standard “let’s cram as many as we can into one room” theater styles, but it also has smaller theater rooms, complete with couches where you can lay back and enjoy the feature. Kick off your shoes, cuddle with your loved one, or take up the whole damn thing, the couch is there for you to enjoy. (And they feel nice.)

2. The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood
Info: (323) 466- 3456
Tickets at Fandango.com
6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood Map
Operated by Landmark Theaters, but VERY different. Located on the busy and heavily trafficked Hollywood Boulevard, the Egyptian Theater seems like a hole in the wall given its lack of flashing lights. Instead, the architecture remains the focus, which, as one might have guessed, resembles an Egyptian temple. Although its near the Hollywood and Highland complex, the Egyptian is not nearly as crowded and plays an assortment of classic films. The seats are comfortable, the staff is friendly, and the crowd is always respectable; that is, the audience is usually there because of the appreciation they have for a film, or for the theater.

3. The Mann Village Theater in Westwood Village
961 Broxton Ave., Westwood Map
Tickets at movietickets.com or moviefone.com

Home to many movie premieres, the Village remains one of Westwood’s finest single movie houses. In fact, most of them have their allure, such as the Majestic Crest (also located in Westwood), but the Village stands out. Typically, a large college crowd populates the theater, which can make for an unintentionally funny movie, but the experience is worth it. Even on a slow night, it’s enjoyable to notice how you and a friend fit into such a large room, like dots on a map.

You may be thinking what about the Arclight? AMC? Regal? Well, as for the latter two, you can find them just about anywhere, so the novelty of such theaters wears off quickly. Admittedly, the Arclight is a great place to catch a movie, and a place everyone should check out. However, I tried to only put the top multipex on this list and although there’s plenty to enjoy at the Arclight, you can’t beat the feeling of watching a movie like you’re at home, like at the Landmark. It’s every movie fan’s dream to have their own movie screen, and the Landmark does their best to bring it, well, home

My favorite theater would have to be The Avenue in good ol’ Downey. It’s close to gone now, and in it’s final days it was a huge craphole. When I was a kid though, it was awesome. To me it seemed like a palace. The Avenue just had this magical feeling like, this is how you are supposed to see a movie. That and it smelled like pee. Those where the days.
