The la.cityzine sports report begins with the Dodgers. Big news for the blue crew, they sign right hander Hiroki Kuroda for 3 years at $35.3 million. It was another big pay day for Frank McCourt, who just paid $36.2 million for Andruw Jones. Kuroda comes out of Hiroshima with a 12-8 record and a 3.56 earned run average. He is expected to be the 3rd or 4th starter, behind Brad Penny, Derrick Lowe, and perhaps Chad Billingsly. This move allows the Dodgers to keep their young talent, who are very valuable in terms of trade possibilities and the future of the roster. With plenty of time before the season, you can bet Ned Colletti will make another big move to improve the line up
.
Tiger Woods played the Target World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks this weekend. He hadn’t played since the President’s Cup, but he came in full form. He opened with a 69, then the course record 62 before the weekend. He led the whole time, shooting a 67 and 68 to close. Woods won by 7 strokes and earned a pot of $1.35 million, which he donated to the Tiger Woods Foundation. The two and a half month break shows Tiger’s ability to dominate without competing as much, and foreshadows what I think will be a historical season.
The Lakers versus Clippers was practically a no contest. It was not a blow out, but at no time were the Clippers close to leading or contesting the Laker offense. Kobe went 11 for 22, scoring 32 points and 8 rebounds. Corey Maggette was the Clippers high scorer with 27 points, and Chris Kaman had another monster night with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Luke Walton finally had a good game, shooting 100% with 15 points. And Sasha Vujacic got hot late in the game, scoring all of his 14 points in the fourth quarter. The final score was 113-92.
The Lakers came off a loss to Golden State, but had defeated the Spurs the night before. They are now 14-9 while the Clippers become 9-14. Sam Cassell is expected to return from his ankle injury when the Raptors come to play the Clippers at Staples Center tomorrow night, while the Lakers begin a road trip in Chicago. The game of the week will be Kobe versus LeBron, the Los Angeles versus Cleveland on Thursday. This game will be on TNT and is sure to excite when two of the NBA’s best collide.
The Kings, 12-19, play tonight versus Colorado at Staples Center. 7:30pm.
