Whenever I’m a new place, the first thing I do is go and find good coffee. When I arrived in LA, it was my mission to find good espresso to begin feeling at home. That’s how I found Cafe Audrey’s. The black and white decor caught my eye from the main street, and I strayed down the side street and discovered it. I could tell you that the espresso I found here was the best I’ve found in LA, or that the staff are wonderfully friendly and polite, or that they do delicious panini’s and caesar salads, or that they have free wi-fi access to boot. But what inspired me for this post was the sheer beauty of this small independent cafe.
There’s something to look at on every wall and in every corner, even on the ceiling. I’m not talking about lines of paintings in frames - the cafe is a work of art unto itself. It’s decorated in primarily black and white, with occasional accents of red, such as the line of poppies growing behind the till. This place is more like a work of art to sit in while you eat and drink. The cafe pays homage to the screen beauty, Audrey Hepburn. Pictures of her can be found around the cafe, including the wonderful cluster of frames to your left as you walk in. I often sit in here until my laptop battery dies. I have artist sensibilities, and it’s inspiring to sit and work in the midst of such amazing decor.
I’m told the cafe was partly designed by a girl who was found crying outside with a portfolio of artwork. The girl was new in Hollywood. The staff found her, and eventually let her loose on the cafe’s walls. That same girl is now working in art direction for films and has become very successful for herself. The cafe’s manager and owner, Lola, often chats to patrons, and pleasingly nearly always co-ordinates her outfits with the cafe’s decor. Visit this gem of a place as though you were visiting a tiny art gallery. The staff also recommend that women visit the bathroom before they leave ![]()
