It’s not local news by any means, but the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, reaches far into the neighborhoods around the world. For many, she represented hope for a true democracy in Pakistan and with her death, that future is dangerously fragile.

Bhutto’s life was filled with blood and controversy - her father was executed and her brothers also assassinated - but she remained “a woman of grand ambitions with a taste for complex political maneuvering.” The first female Prime Minister of any Islamic nation, she spent 8 years in self-imposed exile, returning to Pakistan in October (Incidentally, she survived an assassination attempt on the same day she returned to Pakistan.) She was killed today by gunfire and a suicide bomber as she was leaving a political rally for the upcoming election on January 8th.

There will be many stories about Bhutto’s life and legacy in the days and weeks to come and the effects are already being felt around the world by global leaders and families alike. But here are just a few articles to get you up to speed:

Bhutto’s death has also influenced our own political elections, with many of the presidential candidates issuing statements and talking about her in campaign stops. See what they have to say here: Cnn.com

Is there going to be a time when violence isn’t used as a political solution. When will we be able to clearly and humanly discuss political differences and by doing so discover solutions that are rooted in compromise and understanding, instead of Winner or Loser.
