Transport in LA has a bad reputation. But speaking as someone without a car, it’s not that bad! Before I came to LA, everyone told me I had to have a car to survive. Sure, it’s wonderful to drive, but not necessary. I live in the middle of nowhere; yet I have convenient buses that stop outside my door, and I’m sat right on a train station. I never seem to wait long for a bus either. Besides, nothing beats the glorious dead time of waiting on a bus with your mp3 player. Then there are the characters you meet on a bus, especially here in LA. You’ll never get to chat to interesting and odd strangers while you’re sat alone in your car!
Then there’s the prices. A bus in England over the same distance I travel everyday would cost me 4.20 in pounds, for a single way. That’s roughly 8.10 in dollars. For one way! A return would be 10 dollars! I’m loving the $1.25 bus fare each way here in LA. That’s about 62 pence to my european brain!
I’ve previously lived in compact cities, such as Dublin in Ireland. I lived right on the River Liffey, and could walk everywhere. I could reach Temple Bar by walking fast in just less than 10 minutes. O’Connell Street was 5 minutes away. My housemates and I used to be able to walk home from the nightclubs and the supermarket. Buses or the tram were lazy luxuries. Truth be told, I enjoy walking. It’s meant to be the best form of exercise. Since I’ve been in LA, I can’t count the number of people that have stared at me for walking or offered a lift assuming me to be stranded.
I’ve been told the LA joke about popping in your car to drive around the corner. Don’t be scared- walk or take a bus for a change. See how the other half live.
