On September 22nd 1975, Sara Jane Moore (not featured in picture) attempted to shoot President Ford, and was sentenced to life in prison. One year after Ford’s death, at age 77, she has been released. One can only assume it was because she had learned her lesson and would no longer pursue such actions.
So, what does Moore have to say about her actions?
“Am I sorry I tried?” she said. “Yes and no. Yes, because it accomplished little except to throw away the rest of my life . . . . And, no, I’m not sorry I tried, because at the time it seemed a correct expression of my anger.”
That sure sounds like a person I’d like to meet in a dark alley! James Hewitt was Moore’s public defender at the time and had pushed very hard to try and get an insanity plea before Moore pleaded guilty.
James Hewitt, the now-retired federal public defender who handled Moore’s case, said the public should not be alarmed by her release from prison.
“She is pretty close to becoming an old lady,” Hewitt, who lives in Marin County, said Monday in a telephone interview. “She is probably too old to cause any damage.”
So CityZine readers I ask this of you. BEWARE THE OLD LADY TRYING TO CROSS THE STREET. The next time you see an elderly woman in need, take a moment to think about Sara Jane Moore, this little “old lady” walking around on the streets, waiting for you. She could just need a hand, or she could be packing heat. If you want to risk your life trying to help her, go for it, the choice is yours.
But I’d make sure you give her a little pat down before proceeding.

Personally, I would never let Sara Jane Moore be released from prison. In the USA, it should be mandated that all assassins, even would-be assassins, die in prison. Political assassinations strike at the very heart of a country’s polity, community.

Are you nuts, she’s 77 years old buddy. I think she’s been rehabilitated. What a fool, who cares if she wanted to shoot Ford, if I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard someone talking about shooting Bush, I’d be a billionaire. As long as you don’t do it, you’re fine. Lets her have her twilight years, or what’s left of them.

Nutjobs who actually get a loaded gun and go after political leaders should be apprised ahead of time that they’re going to die forgotten in prison, Jeff. That goes for Bushwhackers, too. Even.

Are you talking about people who have tried to kill Bush or people who say they would like to kill Bush? Because there is a huge difference in numbers there. I do think you are being rather harsh. People who try to kill people should be put away, yes, but there is normally a reason whether justified or not, for why they do it.
We do live in a country that has taken out MANY other political leaders, for what we think are the right reasons.
This woman obviously has something wrong with her mentally and to me that is more worrisome than anything else.
I guess my point is that there are two side to every argument, even my own.

Sorry folks, but both of your arguments are a little weak and unsupported, I was talking about people who “Say” they’d like to shoot Bush, but won’t do it. Also, I’m talking about her age, 77 that’s way too old to still be in prison, for anyone. I don’t feel anyone who’s nearly 80 years on can really do any damage, just a lot of talk. Even if they did want to kill the President.

Jeff a bit confused by your comment. Did I say she belonged in jail? All I’m saying is that if you read the full story she’s never been all there and should be cared for. And as for shooting Bush I was talking about the “Bushwhacker” comment not yours, should have said.
But I do have to disagree with the age thing. She could EASILY kill someone still. A toddler could kill someone with a gun. 77 is not that old. My Grandma’s got a couple of years on her and although she’s hugs and kisses she could easily take a mother fucker down with a gun if she wanted…

If you murder someone in cold blood, you should get a free pass just because you’re old?
So let’s say Grandpa Psychopath decides to kill the family that lives next door by setting fire to their house in the middle of the night, we should all just chalk it up to age and look the other way?

No, not look the other way, but the American prison system is a bit too harsh for geriatrics, that’s just me, even if they did burn down a house. I believe in help not locking them up and forgetting about them. You guys need to check out some prison reform issue stuff before you start putting everyone away, especially for life. That shit is mad expensive, take a peek.

Use a gun, go to jail. Use a gun against a political leader, stay in jail. For life. And that goes for any Bushwhackers, too.

Not just political leader…kill people go to jail!!! Of course she didn’t kill him that’s why she’s out. But as for someone being old, if you can kill someone, you therefore lose the right to live a normal life. Expensive yes, there are many people who could be somewhere else and that leads to MANY other issues…But you can’t kill people no matter what age you are!
And what is the definition of a Bushwhacker? Because it sounds like someone who talks shit about Bush, and if that is the case that our jails would be waaaaaay over filled.
