Cityzine sports report starts with my squad, the Lakers. After a big loss last Sunday to the Celtics, they take a rest, then come back with two blow outs. The first came on Friday when the Lakers destroyed the 76ers, 124-93. All but three Lakers scored in double figures, with Jarvis Crittenton leading all scorers with 19 off the bench. Then yesterday they killed Indiana 112-96, with Kobe Bryant scoring 26, and Andrew Bynum dropping 23, with 13 rebounds. Lamar Odom also had 13 boards and 13 points.
Though the Lakers have won 8 out of their last 10, with a 21-11 record, they have yet to get over the hump of being one of the elite teams in the league. They are in second place, and would be in almost any division, but still manage to lose crucial games in the face of superior teams. In the next five games, they will play four teams with losing records, giving them a chance to improve their record before the next big team. They go on the road to Memphis tomorrow, and then play in New Orleans Wednesday. The Hornets are 23-11, and are the best team they will play until they play Phoenix on the 17th.
Meanwhile, the Clippers continue to lose. They took a loss from the Spurs yesterday 88-82, despite 20 points and 14 rebounds for Chris Kaman. The big man continues to impress, but the team’s inconsistencies overcome. Duncan had 17 points and 17 rebounds, and Tony Parker led all scorers with 26. The Clippers are now 10-21, losing eight out of their last ten, and hosting Orlando on Wednesday, one of the leagues best at 22-13.
The Los Angeles hockey team is in last place, 15-26, with the worst record in the league. The Kings play Nashville tomorrow night at Staples Center.
In baseball, Roger Clemens is among several players who have been asked to testify before Congress on the issue of taking performance enhancing drugs. His attorney says he will comply, but in his interview on 60-Minutes last night, he questioned whether or not it would clear his name. His strength coach, Brian McNamee, will testify that Clemens used steroids in 1998, 2000, and 2001, adding human growth hormones in 2000.
Clemens will claim these potions were pain killers and vitamins as he did in the interview last night, an excuse used by Rafael Palmero. His teammate and close friend Andy Petite has already admitted that McNamee gave him shots with HGH, but while he was recovering from an injury, never while he was healthy.
Clemens denied having taken HGH or any type of steroids. “I’m angry that what I’ve done for the game of baseball … I don’t get the benefit of the doubt,” he said. Clemens is a seven time Cy Young award winner and is widely considered one of the greatest pitchers of all time.
NFL playoffs began this weekend, and it went like this. On Saturday, Jacksonville held off Pittsburg 31-29, and Seattle took Washington 35-14. Sunday it was Giants 24 and Tampa Bay 14. Then Chargers beat the Titans 17-6. The Patriots, Colts, Cowboys, and Packers took the byes, and will plat next weekend.
