I have never intentionally gone to Mexico City but I’ve been there countless times. Let me explain:
Mexico City is the place you end up if your first choice restaurant is closed or if you don’t feel like cooking. Or, if you can’t find parking at, say, Prizzi’s. Their saving grace is that they have their own parking lot.
When thinking back to last few times I’ve been to Mexico City, the reasons were as follows: 1) Alegria was closed, 2) my husband wanted Mexican but we didn’t want to drive, and 3) it was the only place in Los Feliz not crazy-busy on Saturday afternoon. So, there you go.
While this is not a ringing endorsement for poor Mexico City, I have to admit that the food is pretty good. Chips and salsa here are killer. Dip in the green one! When you order, stick with something classic like the cheese enchiladas or the carne asada burrito. Or, if you dig mole sauce, it’s pretty good here. Don’t order the weird cactus salad thing. It really is a cactus on a plate. I’m sure it’s authentic cuisine but who wants to eat that? It actually creeped me out a little bit. I’m getting the shivers just thinking about it. Wash down your meal with a beer or a margarita but don’t bother with the sangria. My friends and I shared a pitcher and concluded that there was no alcohol present. It was like Kool-Aid with fruit floating in it. The margaritas actually pack a punch.
Mexico City is also just “okay” on the ambiance tip. There’s a couple of sombreros on the walls and some kind-of cool murals in the bar area but it’s no Casa Verde or El Cholo, believe you me. If you hit it up during the afternoon or early evening, you’ll most likely be surrounded by cool families with cute kids (probably acting up while the parents smile sheepishly at you) sporting cute-kid clothes from La La Ling. At night, it’s a bit scene-y. It gets pretty loud and crowded and you start wondering if you’ve stumbled into the next cool place. (Remember when Akbar was cool? Like that.) I’ve seen quite a few celebrities here. I’m not sure why they like it, perhaps the parking lot? The inedible cactus salad? The weirdest was Jessica Simpson. It’s shocking she was even allowed out of the valley.
So, check it out and see what you think. I’ll probably see you there the next time my husband needs carnitas. But, it won’t be my first choice.

Well, if you think this place is average, don’t ever, ever, ever, ever, ever go to Malo on Sunset (near Akbar). Not only is the food godawful, the prices are outrageous. $4 for a teacup-sized thing of salsa, and their “traditional mexican bbq” that’s marinated in coke is so disgusting….

greasy chips. only good when they are super hot. as their temperature becomes more mild, so does their appeal.
