As we sit upon eve of the New Hampshire primaries, I am forced to ask if any of these folks could actually be telling the truth. If you set aside all the hype that has so far entangled the presidential race, whether it’s the possibility of a minority president, or the political crumbling of the Republican Party, we’ve all had quite a bit to talk about over the past several months. What I want to know is who’s going to actually solve some of these catastrophic problems that currently have our great nation in a strangle hold.
I’m not going to run down the laundry list of all the shit that needs to be cleaned up around town, because we’ve all heard it a million times, hell we’ve seen documentaries, and heard speeches, people have won awards, but what the fuck has changed?
I guess I was too young to remember all the stuff that went down when Mr. Clinton took over for Bush senior back in the early 90’s, but whoever takes office this time, if successful, will most likely be remembered for their janitorial work, and not their political contributions. The slogan I do remember from Bill’s campaign is “It’s the economy stupid” coined by James Carvel, what would the slogan be this time around “HELP” coined by the Beatles.
I’ll tell you what I’m afraid of, whoever gets into office finds the task so completely overwhelming, that nothing gets done but a whole bunch of blame game bull shit. We’ll get 4 years with some shmuck, and then the Republicans will spin it right back into the White House. Oh Boy! Doesn’t that sound exactly like the Democratic Parties approach to this situation? I am really terrified of what the political landscape looks like for the next 20-30 years.
Who knows, maybe some Abe Lincoln type person will rise up from nothing to help transform America back into something we can be proud of. Just maybe he or she is in their middle school social studies class reading about FDR and The New Deal getting inspired, so one day they can give America a new deal and perhaps a new vision about how to get along in this crazy world, without destroying it.
Now that I look, it sounds a bit like we need a savior, well crap that’s an awful lot to ask of our public school system.
I hate to sound pessimistic, but I guess I don’t know how to be any other way when it comes to American politics, especially the President. In my mind great leaders get assassinated or become rock and roll artists, call me crazy if I’m a little apprehensive about some person in a suit, with a speech, telling me what I’m supposed to care about or believe in. But if your ideas sound right, and they carry themselves with a sense of progressive humanness, then at least I’ll listen, and then I might vote for them. As it stands I don’t think any of these so-called candidates deserve anyone else’s ear or mine.
