Sport Report: Lakers For Real?

January 14th, 2008 Written by: Jose Sanchez· No Comments

bynum suffer injury last night. MRI results due later todayThe whole league wants to know if these guys are for real? The Lakers have become one of the elite teams in the NBA. They are now 25-11 and have won 16 of their last 19 games. Last night they won a squeaker at home against the last placed Memphis Grizzlies. Andrew Bynum left the game with an injury, but they managed to pull it out 100-99, giving them their sixth win in a row, and the crowd some tacos.

Kobe Bryant led all scorers with 37, turning in up in the fourth after Bynum had went down with a knee sprain. X-rays came back negative and there will be an MRI today to find out the extent of the damage. He was 5 for 7 when he went down, with 9 rebounds. The crowd was in silence when Bynum did not immediately rise after a collision just after halftime. It seems they realize how important Bynum has become to the team, and much he has contributed to their improvement.

The Lakers are now a half game in back of Phoenix for the best in the division. They have improved in several ways, but if Bynum is out for too long, they will have to improve even more. The bench has been productive and each player seems to know their role. Lamar Odom remains their number two player, but the recent play of Bynum seems to suggest a change in the near future.

walton and odom need to establish themselves as go to playersIf Andrew Bynum continues to improve, already scoring 13 points, pulling 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks a game, and shooting just under 65% from the field, then he will soon become the Lakers second option, pushing Odom to number 3, and making the team a significant threat in the Western Conference. Odom averages 13 points and 9 rebounds, but has always been inconsistent and capable of much more. He had 10 and 10 last night.

Along with Bynum, Sasha Vujacic, Vladimir Radmanovic, and Chris Mihm are injured, shortening the roster and forcing all players to step up their game, particularly Kwame Brown and Luke Walton, who have struggled all season. They will play in Seattle tonight and will come back to the Staples Center on Thursday to play Phoenix. The winner may decide who leads the division.
