Los Angeles—Artist and Cultural Documentarian Jo Sherwood will be making a rare appearance in Los Angeles, as she presents her latest work “The Disappearing Cultures of Rural China” January 18-20. Based on her travels to the isolated Miao people of southern China, Sherwood offers a glimpse into a way of life that is rarely seen by Western eyes.
Sherwood has traveled all over the world, documenting cultures that are on the verge of extinction due to globalization. However, it is her trip to China that demonstrates a need for cultural exchange with the United States as the 2008 Beijing Olympics approaches.
“Traveling to Asia provided me perspective in terms of the impact of globalized nations on smaller, less-developed cultures and tribes,” Sherwood says. “I want to use my experiences to raise awareness of these people and preserve their way of life.”
Sherwood uses oil paint as a traditional medium, but transforms it into a commentary on modern day society and the global issues that affect everyone. Her work features the rituals and customs of an ancient people, set to the backdrop of industrialized China.
Art critic James Scarborough says that Sherwood’s depiction of daily life and the rituals of rural cultures provide feelings of nostalgia through a modern lens.
“She wants to show the simple majesty and pride of these people,” says Scarborough. “You look at them with awe and wonder as well as with a sense of sadness, knowing that these cultures may not survive.”n the spirit of cultural exchange, Sherwood’s show is sponsored by the Chinese Consulate. Sherwood is also reaching out to the Chinese-American community as she shares her cultural findings and promotes an ongoing international dialogue.
