Smattered across Silver Lake and Los Feliz, there are small, design-conscious boutiques that contain both modern housewares and hip wearables. Whether you need to spice up an old dress, or impress your visiting mother-in-law, these are the shops to scout.
Show
1722 N Vermont Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90027
(323) 644-1960
I can tell you that almost everything in this store is out of my price range, but it is amazing for inspiration. Housewares and knickknacks prevail, but jewelry, bags, and other accessories have a presence. Everything here is made by local (or worldly) artists, in incredibly small numbers. The best way to experience Show is to come and poke around. I can, however, share my favorite purchase—an acrylic “diamond ring” that I wear daily, purchased for a paltry $22.
A+R
1716 Silverlake Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90026
(323) 913-9558
For the social renegade in all of us. The charming folks at A+R have filled the cement-clad store with amazingly eye-catching designs. About the size of a small bedroom, it isn’t a place to take a large group of friends, but it’s good to keep this place a little secret. Cardboard pig statues and ubiquitous mod-themed notecards can be found here, but check out the wall-mounted display cases for the real gems. Enamel belt buckles offer an alternative to skulls and plain metal. Semi-precious stones are gathered on one-of-a-kind necklaces. And, if you are a fashionista, notices a wooden clutch purse that graced the runway of Francisco Costa’s Calvin Klein show a few seasons back. Know how it got there? One of the owners of A+R told Costa about the artist.
Clover
2756 Rowena Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90039
(323) 661-4142
If looking for jewelry as well as a hostess gift, Clover is key. The largest of all shops mentioned in this piece, it has everything you could need, including both men’s and women’s clothing, hats, jewelry, and bags. The front entryway is an inviting array of flavorful teas and perfumed candles, and the back wall is a mini-library of cheeky coffee table books. Dotting the store are apothecary displays, complete with lightly scented lotion, toothpaste, and lipglosses. Their denim selection is quite extensive, given the size and independent-status of the shop. Walk your way to the back of the store to find a room dedicated to kids (or childish adults like myself, seeing as how I have adopted a charming owl stuffed animal from this boutique), as well as a back room filled with tchotskis. Items on sale are limited, but hit at the end of a season to find a generously reduced rack of clothing.
Also: there are parking spaces behind the store!
