The Writer’s Strikes Latest Victims

January 15th, 2008 Written by: Guest Writer· No Comments

Golden Globde08-01-07This past weekend saw another of the many victims of the writer’s strike, in the form of this years Gold Globe Awards ceremony. Usually a televised event, this year it was held as a press conference at the Beverly Hills Hilton hotel, with few of the many stars in attendance. Many of the presenters were entertainment news anchors from shows like Entertainment Tonight and The Insider, people who would ordinarily never be invited to present the awards.

The way the Globes were redone brings up the question of the upcoming Academy Awards. Usually the biggest awards show of the year, this year it is questionable as to if or how the show will be done. The WGA has not come to any agreements so far, though they are still in negotiations. However, that is what has been being said about the negotiations between the WGA and the studios for the past couple months, so I don’t know if that leaves much hope.

Since the writers went on strike, all television shows have ceased production, leaving both the studios and the audience wondering when they will get to see the second half of the season for their favorite shows. Many shows ended up writing their last aired episode as if it were the season finale. The talk shows, such as The Tonight Show, have only recently begun airing new episodes again, and they are suffering from their lack of writer’s. The jokes are a bit flatter and the shows somewhat less entertaining. The Daily Show host Jon Stewart has taken to calling the show “A Daily Show” rather than “The Daily Show” until his writers can return to work. The only show that hasn’t suffered since its return is The Late Show with David Letterman, and this is only due to a deal negotiated between Letterman’s production company, Worldwide Pants, and the WGA.

Let’s hope this gets resolved soon, and we can once again watch our favorite shows.
