A Dutch Legend Comes To L.A.

January 16th, 2008 Written by: Jose Sanchez· No Comments

sander kleinenbergAlright kids. There is good news for Los Angeles. Sander Kleinenberg is launching his residency at the Avalon in Hollywood beginning this Saturday. For those who don’t know, this internationally renown Dutch DJ and producer has been at the fore front of dance music for the past decade and continues to progress the scene with the times. He has challenged himself by integrating and producing video content exclusively for his sets, pioneering the use of DVD technology in a DJ set. “With only music, it is more and more difficult to stand out. Adding video allows me to really enhance the experience.”

Kleinenberg is promoting This Is, a set of releases and events that furthers the cause for positive and innovative celebration. He continues to move further away from the idea of genres and trends. “This Is– is a concept that is about now, about people living in the present… and if I want to be remembered for anything… it was that I was relevant. That I continued to reinvent who I am, and what I do. Because that is what this music is all about: Progress, moving forward, being fresh and innovative. Merging genres and creating new ones.”

Avalon is promoted by Spundae on Saturday nights. It is not the greatest venue for this type of event, but it is not the worst either. The sound is good enough and the visuals come with the talent. But there is a small patio, which sucks if you just want some fresh air, because it is filled with smokers all night. The Avalon is a theatre, so you’ll either be in the lobby, the patio, dancing on the main floor, or on the balcony steps. It is not a club, but Spundae pulls the best talent in town. If Kleinenberg is there, it will be a great night as far as the show. Also, a brilliant young DJ, Kazell, will open for him this Saturday, and Bad Boy Bill will spin February 2nd.

If you want an actual club, there’s the Vanguard in Hollywood, promoted by Giant. Next weekend, January 26th, Infected Mushroom will do a live set. Then February 2nd, BT is in town. Both are huge shows and at a great venue. The Vanguard has a big dance floor that wraps around the DJ, unlike Avalon which has a traditional stage. It makes for a more interesting night when the DJ is a part of the party rather than a focal point. Also, the patio is as popular as the dance floor. It is perhaps just as large with heaters, couches, beds, chairs, bars, and freaks.

The crowd will vary at both places depending on the talent, but nothing is taboo on the dance floor. Bring out your weirdest clothes, moves, drugs, and friends and neither will be frowned upon. And follow the talent. No matter which place you like better, the best time is with the most versatile DJ. “Versatility makes a DJ strong. It makes it easier for a DJ to adjust to different rooms, different countries, different atmospheres in general,” says Kleinenberg. W

hen Sander Kleinenberg spins, he owns the room. The sounds are exactly what you want when you are on the dance floor and the video on the wall moves with the music so well it will blow your mind. There is a certain style to it that meshes perfect with the club scene. “Every artist nowadays has a very strong visual identity. That is a big part of our culture. I’m just growing with that. Bringing together these two aspects, marrying them, just feels like the way things have to be in the future… or now. It is inevitable.”
