Are you stuck in L.A’s cement jungle during rush hour on week night, wishing you had teleportation powers and enough patience to make it home? Tune into Says You! on 89.9 KCRW at 7:30 p.m. It will not only make your drive more than almost bearable, you’ll get to learn useless (and useful!) information to impress your friends with when the weekend rolls around.
Says You! is a weekly entertainment program created by host Richard Sher which features a group of panelists divided into two groups who answer 5 rounds of word games, brain teasers, trivia and parlor games, including “What’s the Difference?”, “Odd Man Out,” “What Came First” and “Melded Movies.” Rounds 2 and 4 are a variation on the classic word game fictionary. One team is given an obscure word, while one member is given the actual definition, the other two members must bluff with fake definitions that they come up with pretty much on the spot. The opposing team then attempts to select the correct definition.
While I was driving home today, traffic was so backed up I felt like a zombie, and only remembered to tune in as it was almost over. The part I did catch required each team to guess what movie a certain quote came from, with bonus points for guessing the actors and the names of the characters they played.
My favorite from tonight was:
“Where did you learn how to kiss like that?”
“I used to sell kisses for the milk fund,” she replies.
“Remind me tomorrow to send a check for $100,000 to the milk fund.”
- Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis in “Some Like it Hot”
Another game I love is one where the team gets a character from a novel and are then prompted to guess the novel and the author. Think quick, Hester Prynne! You might have to go all the way back to high school to remember that one, but for those who didn’t get it, it’s from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter.” Hester Prynne and her secret lover Arthur Dimmesdale were brought to the silver screen by two of Hollywood’s finest: Demi Moore and Gary Oldman.
Listeners also have the option to submit question for the show through the Says You! web site, which also has a list of upcoming shows. They will be filming in L.A on Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26 at the Skirball Cultural Center.
