The thought of getting a new car is quite exciting. Even more so if you’ve had to take the Metro everywhere for the past two years. Can you say, no dates? This was and has been my experience. Thinking of all the places I could now travel to freely without the use of Metal tubes and Screechy buses, my brain started to spin off fantasies and delusions of grandeur.
Just imagine my new girlfriend’s hair blowing in the wind as the top drops, we travel down to PCH laughing and taking in the sun. Yeah that’s right it’s a convertible, don’t hate. Yet, while visions of us pulling over on lookout point to get hot and heavy were plenty; a secondary thought slowly occurred. Gas is expensive, scratch that, gas is RIDICULOUS! The all to familiar big rectangular object with wheels and the metal tubes crept back into my brain. You need us, they said. We are cheap and efficient. More often than not we get you where you need to be on time. Truth be told to, they were right.
If you’re not familiar with riding the buses or Metro here’s some quick pros and cons.
On the plus side, five dollars can get you from Northridge, to Santa Monica pier, or to Long beach, and back in a day. Central heating and cool air are common now to keep you comfortable depending on the season. You have no stress as you are not driving, and once you put in your Ipod ear phones, bliss can be yours. Also, this lets you keep all your money you would have spent on gas and buy anything your heart desires. Which, if you have anything that gets less than thirty miles to the gallon; that’s at least $45 big ones.
The negative sides are these. Depending on what time of day and where you live, no matter which form of Metro you take could be crowded. Likewise there many of the people have less than reputable character, or just people who are just loud in general riding with you. This of course will be the day when you forget your Ipod. Now you have to listen to some guy named George tell his theory on Why 9/11 was a conspiracy. Yes, his name was George. Another problem is the time tables. In New York City even with all it’s traffic the buses there are very good about getting you to your stop on time. In LA, on more than one occasion the buses will come to early. Causing an extra wait of 10 to 45 minutes for the next one to come by. No fun in the warm California sun in August. Lastly you can, and if you’re not careful will get stranded. After a certain hour at night the vast majority of city transit shuts down. Dancing till 2 am with the hot girl at the club, good. Not getting her phone number and finding out there’s no bus till 5 am the next morning, bad.
In closing ,while it pains me to admit it. The Metro system is a great and more than affordable way to get around LA. Do yourself a favor though and check out their website www.metro.net . They have all kinds of trip planning and even the most up to date schedule of when all the buses in your particular area run. So, while I’ll thoroughly enjoying taking my new wheels out for a spin There will be no shame in taking the metro; who knows I might even see you there. Just don’t take it personally if the headphones go on while you’re talking.
