Movie Trailers for…This Week at the Movies

January 17th, 2008 Written by: Jeff Barrick· No Comments

The Box Office The weekend begins at 11:59 PM on Thursday night where I live baby. That’s when the midnight showing of Cloverfield is going down and you can bet your ass I’ll be there. Surprisingly, that is not the only highlight of weekend. We are also privy to what looks like a pretty darn badass Woody Allen flick called Cassandra’s Dream. There is a serious Documentary that deserves some attention entitled Taxi to the Dark Side, the story follows the wows of an innocent Afghani cab driver that was picked up and carted off to Cuba. The director also created the amazing Enron: The Smartest Guys in the room.

There are three other films this week has churned up, the strangest of them is a horror movie that has a premise one can hardly believe. A woman discovers her vagina is riddled with razor sharp metal shards, the film is quaintly titled Teeth. Mad Money is a female comedy about a group of folks that rob the bank they work at. They rely on their wits to pull the heist instead of guns and masks. The last is a real crapper called 27 Dresses, it has the chick from Knocked Up in it, but that is no incentive for anyone to go and watch this.

Below is a series of trailers for each film with a cast and director listing. Check them out and make your own conclusions, then pick one and go see it, because these people worked hard as hell to get it up on that screen. The least you can do is watch something.

Cloverfield – Directed by Matt Reeves and Produced by JJ Abrams

Revolves around a monster attack in New York as told from the point of view of a small group of people. If you want more info, check out the cityzine review of the film.

Cassandra’s Dream – Directed by Woody Allen and Staring Ewan McGregor & Colin Farrell

The story of two Cockney brothers (Farrell and McGregor) in south London and their relationship with a young woman (Atwell) who lands in London on her search for fortune. She crosses the two men by accident on her path and when one them falls in love with her, she becomes aware of her power to attract the opposite sex and uses this to the point of leading the two brothers, who are in financial difficulty, into crime, and creating a dangerous rivalry between the two men.

Taxi to the Dark Side – Directed by Alex Gibney

An in-depth look at the torture practices of the United States in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, focusing on an innocent taxi driver in Afghanistan who was tortured and killed in 2002.

Teeth – Directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein

High school student Dawn works hard at suppressing her budding sexuality by being the local chastity group’s most active participant. Her task is made even more difficult by her bad boy stepbrother Brad’s increasingly provocative behavior at home. A stranger to her own body, innocent Dawn discovers she has a toothed vagina when she becomes the object of violence. As she struggles to comprehend her anatomical uniqueness, Dawn experiences both the pitfalls and the power of being a living example of the vagina dentate myth.

Mad Money – Directed by Callie Khouri and Staring Diane Keaton, Katie Holms, & Queen Latifah

Three female employees of the Federal Reserve plot to steal money that is about to be destroyed.

27 Dresses – Directed by Anne Fletcher and Staring Katherine Heigl

After serving as a bridesmaid 27 times, a young woman wrestles with the idea of standing by her sister’s side as her sibling marries the man she’s secretly in love with.

This has the makings of a truly fantastic weekend of cinema. I have a bunch of these on my “to watch” list, as well as a couple that are already out in theatres. With the Oscars breathing down our necks, we really need to get cracking on our movie watching because how can you pick who’s going to win, if you haven’t seen the film.
