Red Hand/White Man: ALOUD at Central Library

January 18th, 2008 Written by: Big Al, the gal· No Comments

RedHandWhiteMan_crosswalkRed Hand/White Man is a new weekly section of miscellaneous downtown events, people, and situations that will be updated on Fridays. Red Hand/White Man is supposed to remind you of the crosswalk signals. Heh, get it?

This week, I want to talk about a place that is very near and dear to my heart: The Central Library (located at 630 W. 5th Street). This place is not your average library, it is the 3rd largest public library in the country!

Even more exciting than the size of the library (though yes, size does matter) is the ALOUD program. At lapl.org, you can reserve up to six seats in advance, free of charge (most of the time). You’d be wise to reserve as early as possible since the events sometimes fill up. They do have standby ticketing for the gambling souls among us.

One such filled program will occur next Wenesday, January 23, at 7pm. The topic? The Height of Ambition: New Development Downtown, A Panel Discussion. LA Times architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne will moderate a panel composed of Lauren Bon, Tom Gillmore, Martha Welborne, and James Von Klemper.

Yesterday, Thursday, I saw author and Harvard Law professor Randall Kennedy interviewed by journalist and LA Times columnistk Gregory Rodriguez. The topic? Kennedy’s new book Sellout: The Politics of Racial Betrayal. I bet you wish you knew what he said on that subject. Read the book!

The day before, I saw Arianna Huffington, editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post , interview David Frum, former speechwriter and special assistant to President Bush (W). The topic? Frum’s new book Comeback: Conservatism That Can Win Again. The audience was composed primarily of authentic 60’s hippies, so the Q&A was exciting!

For more information on upcoming events and reservations, visit the ALOUD program calendar. Please also feel free to email or comment any questions and I’ll do my best to answer them.
