Lots of people are dancing around the “r” word these days. Economists, politicians, experts in many areas are on both side of the issue. Whether you believe we are in a recession or not we can all stand to save a little money these days. After all it is January and all of the holiday bills are coming due. What can we do to keep ourselves entertained and not break the bank?
My first recommendation is the Griffith Park Observatory. When the newly renovated observatory first reopened after being closed for nearly 5 years you had to make a reservation and pay $8 for a shuttle ride up the hill. To be honest it was a hassle. I was so happy to hear that the shuttle has been discontinued and you can now drive up to the observatory on your own when you are ready. Day or night you will have an incredible view of the city and the universe. Parking and admission are both FREE!
Looking out from the parking lot you see the city sprawling and the traffic crawling. If you go late afternoon/early evening you can get a great view of the sunset. After watching the sun set you can take in all of the great exhibits. The exhibits include a Tesla coil and a collection of meteorites. You can step on scales to see how much you would weigh on different planets. There is a great view of the universe in the area known as the Cosmic Connection. Here you can sit and meditate or ponder the existence of life or anything else that comes to mind. Then you can go back out and look at the universe through the Zeiss telescope on the roof. Often you will find telescopes set up on the lawn at night with friendly folks who are happy to show you how their telescopes work.
If you want to take in the planetarium show tickets are reasonably priced at $ 7 for adults and $ 3 for children.
