Stopping Global Warming: Focus the Nation event at UCLA

January 19th, 2008 Written by: Nicola· No Comments

http://www.sustain.ucla.edu/FtNteaser.jpgIf anyone hasn’t noticed, our country and planet are in dire states in a few (oh, maybe a lot of) ways. We’ll be nice and just focus on one, global warming. But no need dwell on it or sit, angry and depressed because our rainforests are quickly dwindling into nothing (Hey it’s sad! The poor birds and sloths!) So instead, actually standing up to change the environmental problems sounds a bit more logical, and energy-efficient. (It’s true, being more positive uses less energy. A frown requires the use of many more muscles than a smile. Pretty interesting, huh? If you haven’t already read that already on an Inspirational Quotes stand-up calendar at Borders.)

So optimism, awareness, and activism are the path of action many college students across the country are taking: with the Focus the Nation campaign. They’re working to achieve global warming solutions for our country. This month it’s UCLA’s turn to do its part, so it will be hosting a Focus the Nation event right here on campus.

On, January 31, all day, green will be the word. In fact, I’m green with envy at the fact that I’ll most likely be scheduled to work all day. Oh wait, I forgot, the event lasts from 10 AM until 10:30 PM: no excuse not to go, even for us workaholics! If anything, you can stop by and check out some of the sustainable vendors (Sleepy? They’ll be Peak Organic Brewing Co. coffee. Feet hurt? Tom’s Shoes will have a booth. Want to…ride a bike? The Los Angeles Bicycling Coalition will be present as well.)

Although shopping is always what attracts me, there’s chances to, yes, actually learn about the science of global warming (1:30-3pm in Kerkhoff Hall) and even look at some “Live Art” in Bruin Plaza (I’m in the process of finding out what this will be.)

Even cooler is that “The 11th Hour” film will be screened at 8 PM. Think this is too much granola-munching, tree-hugging, hemp-wearing hippie business? Don’t worry: Leonardo DiCaprio’s in the film. You can at least stare at his face for two hours.

So there, something for every person. And tree. A full event schedule and list of all the cool vendors, and even information about possible jobs and internships, is available at: www.sustain.ucla.edu.

You gotta check out this event. You can go shopping, watch a movie, sample some organic snacks, and look at art, and still credit yourself for helping save our planet earth. Cool, man!

Again, it’s January 31st at UCLA, start with the Vendors at Ackerman Union (Map)
