We’ll start with basketball. The Lakers have their toughest road trip ahead of them, nine in a row, just after losing an improving Andrew Bynum. The “fans” at Staples Center were heard on Thursday night, booing Kwame Brown after a horrible performance, contributing seven turnovers, missing a couple lay-ups, and wide open dunks.
Now, I hate Kwame too; he sucks, a project that never panned out, and almost worthless if not for his size, but it’s my position never to boo my own team. I doubt Kwame would have had seven turnovers if the crowd was behind him. Kwame actually apologized to the team after the loss to Phoenix. The Lakers are now 26-12 facing Denver tonight here in L.A. Let’s try and be supportive of a guy who will be getting the bulk of the minutes while Bynum is out.
Meanwhile the Clippers got a big win against the Nets in overtime, 120-107. Corey Maggette led all scorers with 31 improving the team record to 12-24. They will play today at 12:30 against the Utah Jazz here in L.A.
USC defeated fourth-ranked UCLA on Saturday 72-63. Davon Jefferson scored a career high 25 points, leading his team to victory in a late surge at Pauley Pavilion. On Thursday, UCLA 4-1, will face Oregon 3-2. USC 2-3 will play Oregon State 0-6 for Pac-Ten action.
Roy Jones Junior defeated Felix Trinidad in a 12 round one sided decision. Jones out boxed Trinidad, showing more speed and conditioning, but it was not that impressive against a sorry looking Trinidad. He had not been in the ring in 32 months and had lost a hop in his step, not to mention his tone. The under card was exciting enough for Don King to come out with a decent night of fights at Madison Square Garden. Look for pictures of Andrew Golota’s eye after the fight, unreal.

Australian Open is happening and we’re almost into the quarter finals. For the men, James Blake (12) is in and waiting for last year champion, Roger Federer (1). He plays today against Tomas Berdych (13) along with a few other matches. Match of the day would be Novak Djokovic (3), against hometown favorite Lleyton Hewitt (19) to battle for a quarter final position. And Rafael Nadal (2) is already set to play Jarkko Nieminen in the quarter finals.
The womens quarter final is set with some heavy hitters. Both Williams sisters have made it this far and will play higher seeds. Serena (7) will play Jelena Jankovic (3), and Venus (8) will play Ana Ivanovic (4). The match of the day and perhaps the tournament is Maria Sharapova (5) and Justin Henin (1), both playing exceptional tennis.
The Patriots will face the Giants in the Super Bowl February 3rd in Arizona, to try and achieve the never accomplished perfect season. Go New York.
I miss baseball.
