Super Bowl XLII: The Patriots vs. Eli Manning

January 21st, 2008 Written by: Jeff Barrick· No Comments

Super Bowl XLIIIf you would’ve asked me 6 weeks ago whether or not a Manning would be playing quarterback in Super Bowl 42, I would have said YES. But, I don’t think anyone thought it would be Eli Manning and his New York Giants, facing Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. The Giants gave New England the best they could in the last game of the regular season, some would say they played a better overall game then the Patriots, but Tom Brady and the boys somehow managed to sneak by.

This afternoon in Green Bay the Giants played a hell of a football game upsetting Brett Farve and the Packers 23-20. The stage has been set, and Tom Petty will be performing the halftime show. I must say Petty has some pretty big shoes to fill. Prince blew-out last years Super Bowl halftime show, it was awesome, and certainly the best one I’ve ever seen to date. He closed out the set with Purple Rain, and literally, it was raining, purple lights were shining through the rain, holy shit, it was great. I personally am not looking forward to a powerhouse rendition of Refugee, but I’ll give the old Heartbreakers the benefit of the doubt.

Tom Brady Everyone on earth is going to have the Giants as a million point underdog in the big game, I would love nothing more than to see all those idiots have to eat their words. It just seems like the universe has aligned perfectly for the Patriots, even when they should lose, they don’t. From early on in the season I have done every extra-spiritual type of thing possible to try and jinx or upset the supernatural forces guiding New England to victory. At this point I think it’s safe to say I’m no Wiccan priest, and I have no spiritually manipulative skills, but I do have hope.

Hope can be a very powerful thing, and New England has created more enemies then fans this season, as we band together in hatred for the Patriots maybe all of our collective hopes and wishes can turn the tide, and take on the role of the 12th man on the field for the Giants. The 12th man may be just enough to give us a little edge over those bastards, because a little can go a long way when you add HOPE. Eli Manning

You may not be crazy about Eli Manning or the Giants, but they’re all you’ve got left in the battle between good and evil. Fate can be a bitch though, and it sure seems like New England has a date with destiny, I’m just hoping we’ve got it wrong and it’s Eli’s fate that will be the talk of the town. If you don’t think the Giants have a chance you are just dead wrong, on any given Sunday, any team can come up with a win, or a lose. The Patriots are certainly not immune to that, although the season up until now might suggest the opposite. I’m rooting for the underdog, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because I wouldn’t know any other way to do it. When something is wrong, it’s obvious, and shouldn’t be allowed to continue. Something is wrong, and has been wrong with New England’s “perfect season” and for them to go on and win the Super Bowl, well, it would just be too much. Lets cross our fingers, and give Eli and the gang all the HOPE we can.
