- L.A. Museum of the Holocaust Breaks New Ground for It’s New Construction - The building is expected to be complete in 2010 and should help teach around 50,000 high school students every year. Admission will be free. “Survivors, public officials and Israeli diplomats participated in Friday’s ceremony for the innovative designed building, which will rise on city-owned property in the Pan Pacific Park, adjacent to the existing Holocaust memorial monument.”
- Suit Filed Over Dangers of Alaskan Drilling - Conservation groups sued a federal agency over the offshore petroleum lease sale in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska’s northwest coast, which could harm polar bears and other marine animals. “The groups said the documents could reveal that the federal Minerals Management Service’s plans for the outer continental shelf sale are ill-advised and possibly illegal.”
- Crews Still Working to Restore Power Outages due to Weather - Utility crews have worked all day trying to restore power to Lake Arrowhead, Carson, Stevenson Ranch, Monrovia, Mira Loma, Torrance and San Bernardino areas. Southern California Edison (SCE) and Department of Water and Power (DWP) are both the blame. About 2,000 DWP customers and 3,700 SCE customers have been effected.
- Couple Faces Sentencing in Slavery Case - James Jackson, 54, vice president of Sony Pictures and his wife, Eilizabeth, 55, plead guilty last July of harboring and alien. They were expected to be sentenced today for forcing their Filipina housemaid Nena Ruiz, to work like a slave. Ruiz worked 18 hour days for nearly 2 years and said that “Elizabeth Jackson regularly slapped her and pulled her hair. She also said she was forced to sleep on a dog bed and was paid a grand total of $300 for her work.” Elizabeth faces up to four years in prison and James up to 200 hours of community service.
- Fake Hijacking Forces Plane to be Evacuated - The United Airlines jet landed safely after the 757 left JFK in New York, and taxied at a remote part of LAX after they received a phone call about a hijacking. The jet landed safely and all 71 passengers and crew were fine.
