Short on cash? Recently started dating someone and not sure if they’re worth it? Whatever your reason for not shelling out the big bucks on Valentine’s Day, rest assured that good times can still be had on a budget.
Skip the fancy dinner on Thursday night and opt for an economical day-date. Though a bit heavier on the prep work, you’ll come off as both creative and romantic.
Start at local favorite market Boccatos in Hermosa Beach (3127 Manhattan Ave, 310.376.0574) for fresh deli sandwiches, sides and Spicy Thai Kettle Chips. The wine selection is small but well-edited and the staff is always full of suggestions. Or, if you’re that kind of guy or gal, Ocean Liquor across the street sells cold beers in six-packs and singles.
After you’ve collected your goodies, load up and head further south to Hermosa Beach. Park the car and walk to Hermosa Cyclery (20 13th Street, 310.374.7816) where you can rent a tandem bicycle for $13 an hour, or $58.50 for a full 24. Avoid the busy streets of Hermosa and Redondo in favor of a northerly ride up the Strand back towards Manhattan Beach. A map of Manhattan’s well-manicured parks can be found here, though the best ocean views (short of sitting on the beach) can be found at Bruce’s Beach Park (intersection of Highland and 27th). Bruce’s is an ideal picnic location, though be advised that consuming alcohol in a public park is not exactly legal - guzzle at your own risk.
If your wallet still has a couple of shekels weighing it down on the ride back to Hermosa, swing by Manhattan Beach Creamery (1120 Manhattan Avenue, 310.372.1155) and split a sundae. Hopefully you’ll be working off those ice cream calories with a little evening exercise.
Though if your date ends when you return the bikes, keep in mind that Hermosa Beach has no shortage of bars packed with young singles on the prowl. If you’re lucky, maybe someone will buy you a drink.

A “day date”, that sounds like the greatest idea! Then there is time for the “real date” in the evening, whether it is continued or someone new!
