It’s no secret that some of the best restaurants in Los Angeles are hidden inside strip malls, crushed between dry cleaners and nail salons. But until setting foot inside of Dainties Cupcakes, I’d never heard of a place actually being in the alley behind a strip center. Voted Best Cupcake in LA 2007 by Los Angeles Magazine, Dainties Cupcakes is actually the brainchild of caterers Chef Bill Dertouzos and Susan McAlindon, owners of Flatbush & J Gourmet Co.
Their motto is “It’s all about the cream†– and it truly is. Dainties cupcakes come in only one flavor – chocolate devil’s food cake, dipped in chocolate ganache. Each cupcake is filled and topped with flavored whipped cream ranging in flavor from “stupid chocolate†to strawberry, nutella and crème de menthe. Although it may seem like this cupcake is just a glorified Ding Dong, it truly is a decadent treat. The cream fillings are light in texture and delicately flavored. It’s rich and sweet, but not so much that your teeth hurt.
As tasty as these cupcakes are, Dainties does have its downsides. Occasionally, the cake portion of the cupcake does dry out due to the refrigeration required to keep their whipped cream fillings fresh. Secondly, the shop, if you can find it, isn’t really a shop at all. It’s just a counter and display case, so snacking there is not an option. Finally, the store is only guaranteed to be open for walk-ins on Saturdays from 10am to 3pm. So if you’re craving a sinful chocolately treat that is both beautiful and delectable – you better hope your stomach gives you 24 hours notice so you can order online.

Sinfully delish - I couldnt have said anything more about my poetic purchase of chocolate cakes. I like to consider myself a cupcake connoisseur, and despite the fridge freeze out these are hands down the best I’ve ever had.

Strawberry and Creme de Menthe are the BEST! I’m glad someone has taken notice of the cutest cupcakes in town. Sometimes the best is hard to get!
