I heard it over and over again. “Yummy Cupcakes are delicious! The best cupcakes in Santa Monica.” Considering that there are three bakeries in a 4 block radius, that’s a bold statement, one that necessitates an investigation.
A visit to Yummy Cupcakes in Santa Monica yielded one classic vanilla cupcake with sprinkles, one chocolate with vanilla frosting, an “old school” chocolate cupcake with creamy filling and a quirky peanut butter flavored cupcake, complete with a dollop of the sandwich spread for garnish. One by one, my tasters and I sliced up the cakes, taking bites here and there while discussing the ratio of cake to frosting. The consensus:
Vanilla cupcake with vanilla frosting and sprinkles: My mother could have made this cupcake from a boxed Betty Crocker mix. Only she would have remembered to stir it with something other than her foot.
Chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting: Soft, chocolately cupcake with gobs of vanilla frosting. Gobs of vanilla frosting - so much sugary frosting that my teeth hurt through the weekend.
“Old School”: The delicious surprise Little Debbie/Ding Dong/Ho Ho throwback. The same chocolately cupcake as before, only stuffed with creamy filling and covered in a thick chocolate ganache.
Peanut Butter cupcake: This particular cupcake introduced me to a flavor I’d never tried before - burned peanut butter. The biggest letdown of the evening, this cupcake was dry and crumbly and we couldn’t get past the burned peanut butter taste. Skip this cupcake!
After several fervent text message exchanges with a Yummy Cupcakes devotee who told me that I was way off base and that my failure to sample the red velvet was to be my downfall, I was forced to give this bakery a second shot. Yummy Cupcakes has two Los Angeles locations, the second one being in Burbank. This time the red velvet was available.
Uh, yum. Dare I say it? Yummy.

Red velvet and chocolate with chocolate….they rule. The rest are just bullshit flavors. Glad you liked the red velvet.

OK, so I had a bit of a problem posting this article - but I did try the red velvet and it was pretty good. And yes, CC - I am saying that Burbank makes a better cupcake than SM!
