18 kt Oval earringsWell, ladies and gentlemen, the final gift-giving holiday of the winter season is upon us. This weekend marks the last two days during which you have 12 hours to peruse Los Angeles’s shops and boutiques to find a Valentine’s Day gift. It is never fun (or appreciated) to scurry around the city in traffic, trying to find a special something in the hours between clocking out and dinner.

Here, I’ve got a few suggestions, for the long-term ladyfriend:

Get in your car, drive to 4649 Russell Ave in Los Feliz, find parking, and run into Cake.

It is not a bakery. It is a delightful space filled with chic and wearable jewelry. Opened in 2000, the shop offers exclusively hand-forged jewelry that is subtle but spectacular. Not a single piece contains nickel or zinc, so a ring will never turn your friend’s finger green. All in all, these moderately-priced pieces will certainly impress.

Try these hand-hammered 18 karat gold oval hoops with hand-cut gemstones for something sparkly… but graciously non-commital. You also can never go wrong with sweets. Rather than hitting up Godiva for a tackily-wrapped box of Nutella-filled clamshells, try something familiar, but in a larger quantity. Show up with a stack of Diddy Riese ice cream cookie sandwiches and a bottle of Champagne. (Both can be stored in a cold fridge or freezer.) The mixture of high and low (and cookie and booze) will have her swooning. And giddier than a schoolgirl who gets her first anonymous Valentine.

The above options works for both girls you have been seeing for less than two months and girls you have been seeing for more than three years. In between that? It’s a tenuous balance. Since I’ve already discussed the ideal place to purchase lingerie, an alternative for gentlemen callers will be harder to come by. An ideal option? Man food. And nothing says “man food” like burgers. Try 25 Degrees — gourmet burgers. Good: ground sirloin burgers as a base. Better: choice of toppings, a build-your-own type of place. Best? Open 24 hours, every day. Ideal for, say, refueling at 3 am…

Can’t exactly package it in a box, but I don’t think he’ll mind.
