This is the time of year we hear all of the ads and see all of the stores promoting gifts to show how much you love your sweetheart. This is presuming you have a special someone in your life. Many people are desperate to find someone before the big day arrives so they have a special person in their lives. There are many places where you can find the love of your life. A friend of mine found the love of his life at a swap meet. She was quietly sitting in a cardboard box. She was the runt of the litter and the last to be chosen. Her name was Maggie. She was the one true love of his life.
Anyone looking to find true love should go to your local animal shelter. There you will find unconditional love. Someone who will neither judge you, criticize you nor question you. You don’t have to spend big bucks on them for Valentine’s Day. All this little love wants is a little food, water, a place to sleep and your love.
Wonderful loving pets can be found every day at your local shelter. These pets are in shelters mainly through no fault of their own. Sometimes their owners find out that they or another family member are allergic. Many of the animals are purebreds. Sometimes the family moves and is unable to take them. With the recession on, more and more families are finding it hard to afford the mortgage payments. It has been reported by some realtors that some families are leaving pets in foreclosed homes. Many pets that don’t find homes are killed in spite of the best efforts of rescue groups. The dozens of rescue groups around the city rescue all kinds of animals from cats and dogs to bunnies and parrots. Some specialize in particular breeds.
No matter what kind of pet fancier you are there is a match for you. Love is waiting for you – all you have to do is go and get it. Here are some of the local shelters in the area:
- North Central – LA City - 3201 Lacy Street 90031 888 452-7381 Ext. 141
- South – LA City - 3612 Eleventh Ave. 90018 888 452-7381 Ext. 142

- East Valley – LA City14409 Vanowen St. Van Nuys 91405 888 452-7381 Ext. 145
LA County Shelters - Have shelters in Gardena, Agoura, Baldwin Park, Castaic, Downey, Lancaster, Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, and Santa Monica.
Many rescue groups go to local swap meets, Farmers Markets and pet stores on weekends and hold pet adoptions. Maybe if you are lucky like my friend you too can find the love of your life quietly sitting and waiting to be taken home and loved.

Great idea, Jan! I adopted both my dog and my cat from the Burbank Animal Shelter. My dog lets me know how grateful he is every day by giving me lots of love. My cat doesn’t give a shit….but, she sure is pretty.
