This weeks round up of what not to miss live, what to Tivo, and what sport games are on that are worth watching.
What to Watch Live:
American Idol (Tuesday & Wednesday, FOX, 8 PM)
With auditions finally over, the show goes to the next, less entertaining stage. 164 singers have been chosen to come to Hollywood. After Wednesday night, only 24 will remain. Watch to find out which ones will move on and to figure out your favorite for this season.
Big Brother 9 (Tuesday, CBS, 9 PM)
The show returns for its ninth season. It’s kind of amazing to think that Big Brother has really been on the air for that long, isn’t it? This season features a new gimmick – every house member is single and has been paired with someone else in the house as a potential “love mate.” Time will tell whether or not the potential love works out, but it is almost guaranteed to lead to at least one couple who are trying to tear each other’s throat out each week. Fun for everyone.
Jericho (Tuesday, CBS, 10 PM)
This cult hit returns after a nine month layoff. It was cancelled in May of last year due to lackluster ratings, but fans of the show responded with a massive grass roots effort, sending CBS over 20 tons of nuts, chosen as the item to be sent because of a line in the show. CBS responded by renewing the show for an eight episode mini-season. Watch because you’re one of the people who sent the nuts or just if you want to see what all of the fuss was about.
What to DVR
Flavor of Love (Monday, 6 PM, VH1)
It is doubtful that anyone predicted the long-term success of Flavor of Love before the show went on the air three years ago. See Flavor Flav’s new assortment of trashy women as they vie for his affection, at least until the next season. But there aren’t even any new gimmicks to get you to watch.
Nova (Tuesday, 8 PM, KCET)
Tuesday is a big night for TV. In addition to the lighter fare above, Nova breaks a story this week about astronaut spies, which must by default be at least fairly interesting. During the Cold War, NASA ran a secret program to train a small group of astronauts in order to spy on the Soviet Union. The astronauts were never told the purpose of the program, but the Soviets responded by working on prototypes of a space station for spying purposes. Nova contributor Jim Banford investigates.
What Sports to Watch
Kansas Jayhawks at Texas Longhorns (Monday, 6 PM, ESPN)
Number four Kansas meets number twelve Texas in a key Big 12 showdown. Kansas has lost only one game all year, but if anyone has a chance to beat them, it may be the Longhorns, who have overcome the loss of star Kevin Durant to remain one of the top teams in the nation.
Phoenix Suns at Golden State Warriors (Wednesday, 6 PM, ESPN)
Dallas Mavericks at Phoenix Suns (Thursday, 7:30 PM, TNT)
Old friend Shaquille O’Neal should make his Suns debut in one of these two games. Shaq’s status is uncertain due to a quadriceps injury, but coach Mike D’Antoni wants to get him into a game before next week’s showdown with the Lakers. It remains to be seen how the addition of Shaq and the loss of Shawn Marion will affect the Suns, but these two games, both against potential playoff opponents, should give an early gauge on the situation.
