Money’s tight this Valentine’s Day. Even though it sounds as if the WGA strike may be over (finally! thank you!), I’m still not expecting reservations at Table 8, know what I mean? But good food doesn’t have to cost a fortune. On the off chance that my husband is reading my blog today, I’m going to throw out the big hint. A carne asada taco from Yuca’s and some Dos Equis will do the trick. Yeah, I know, I’m easy to please. Throw in some flowers or chocolate and I’ll be your Valentine.
If you haven’t tried Yuca’s yet, don’t feel bad. I’ve probably walked by this tiny but adorable stand at least a hundred times. I’ve marveled at the long line and the wonderful smells and walked on by. I have no excuse. People have even told me how outrageously yummy it is but did I listen? No, I did not. And, I’m ashamed people, I’m ashamed. Because what self-respecting Los Angeleno (especially one who lives in Los Feliz) would go this long without tasting the goodness?
Last week, I finally jumped in line. On a friend’s recommendation, I got the carne asada burrito and my partner in crime got carnitas tacos. The food came up lightning fast and we scarfed down our food sitting right there in folding chairs scattered around the taco stand. Oh, delicious fresh happiness in a tortilla! I’m in love. I actually thought the tacos were better than the burrito but, then again, I’m a corn tortilla type of chic. Not to say that the burrito wasn’t bursting with the tastiness. It was. But, I think from now on I’m going for the carne asada taco. Which costs 2 bucks, by the way. Burritos are 3.50 or 4. Talk about your cheap date.
You can find street parking easily on Hillhurst or you can park in the very same parking lot where the taco stand sits. Be patient with the line. It moves fast and it’s not as bad as it looks. Have your cash ready and send your friend to the liquor store next door for drinks because there’s really not much of a beverage selection.
Don’t make the same mistake I did, folks. Go have a taco at Yuca’s and see what people have been raving about since 1976. Hey, take your Valentine for a taco. It’s about quality not quantity, right? Taste, not cost? It’s the thought that counts? Trust me, she’ll only be pissed until the first bite.
[Editor's note: Yuca's is totally radical to the max. Awesome bean and cheese burrito's. Good call, Kendra]
