Development Hell: Crank up the Beach Boys, Baby

February 12th, 2008 Written by: Zane· No Comments

strikesign08-02-11.jpgIt’s over. So who won?Nobody, really. The studios gave more than they wanted. The writers got less than they asked for. But the industry is back in action. For awhile.

The final deal cut by the studios will allow WGA members more kick-downs from downloads and web-streaming than they would have received had the strike never occurred. But there are some gripes, concerning a “17 - 24 day, free streaming window” for online content. Basically, the writers won’t get residuals on streaming shows or movies until after that window. But most people who watch streaming content watch it online within the first 5 days of its initial posting.

Anyway, WGA leaders had this to say about the final deal: “Much has been achieved, and while this agreement is neither perfect nor perhaps all that we deserve for the countless hours of hard work and sacrifice, our strike has been a success.”

Now, the studios have 4 months to kick in to hyper-drive before the actors strike. And if SAG cuts a better deal than the writers just signed, WGA has a “handshake agreement” with the studios, allowing for the WGA contract to be revised if such occurs. Sounds like there’s a lot trust going around. In Hollywood? That’s just absurd.

Cynicism aside though, let’s forget about dollars and cents for one second. How ’bout some quality cinema? In theaters. More than three times a year? I know, It’s a stretch, but this town was founded on dreams. So I’m gonna close my eyes, pretend it’s still 1977, that corporate America hasn’t cannibalized it’s pop-culture to death, and that our country isn’t full of fat dumbasses who jack off to sports every weekend while their children sit in movie theaters, unsupervised, singing along to “Hannah Montana.”

Then I’m gonna go watch The OC on DVD.

Fuck.
