After spending a year living in France, one ultimately cannot escape eating a lot of fromage or cheese as we like to call it back in the States. I lived in a relatively large Southern city named Toulouse where good cheese was so easy to find, it practically didn’t matter what you chose, it was always delicious.
With this in mind, it may seems obvious that cozy fondue joints were everywhere, offering a wide selection of Gruyere, Bethmale and Roquefort. Coming back to California, I found a shortage of quaint fondue places until I heard about The Melting Pot.
Although it is a chain, the restaurant is cozy, fun and most importantly romantic. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it’s a great way to spend it with someone special. The whole experience is romantic - the wine, the food (meant to be shared) and the general atmosphere of the restaurant.
The last time I was there (on a date, of course), we shared a bottle of wine and started with the traditional swiss cheese fondue - made tableside. If you are looking to go all out (and Valentine’s Day is the day to do so), The Melting Pot offers what they call the Big Night Out, which includes a cheese fondue, salad for two, an entree fondue featuring meat and seafood and of course a dessert fondue. All the items are meant to be shared by at least two people, but if you are with a big group this is also the place to go; the whole style of dining is meant to be shared among several people.
If you aren’t interested in the fixed menu, each item is also sold a la carte for those who’d like to design their own meal. The entire experience is really fun and intimate - a perfect way to spend a romantic evening with someone you love. The restaurant also features some outrageous cocktails including the Love Martini and Strawberry Basil Lemonade.
The dessert is really the best part of the meal. The Melting Pot offers exotic dessert fondue such as the Disaronno Meltdown or the Cookies n’ Cream Marshmallow Dream. Each dessert comes with fresh strawberries, bananas, cheesecake, marshmallows, pound cake and brownies for dipping. It just doesn’t get any more decadent than that!
The service is wonderful and most fondues are actually prepared tableside, so you get to see exactly what is going into your food. Its exciting to watch and eat. You can visit their website to view an entire menu (with prices) as well as find the location nearest you. It’s definitely worth a visit!
