Now, here is a post where I solicit information. If you had to choose, what would be your favorite LA bookstore?
Since I’m a snob, and, let’s face it, anti-capitalist, I want to steer away from chains, like Borders and Barnes & Noble. Their selection sucks, essentially, and I don’t like the hold they have on publishing companies. (I heard horror stories from professors in college, about how arduous the process was to get a book- especially a cover- published. Why? Because the head book buyers for Borders and B&N have such a sway on your design, and jacket information, to the point that they control the market.)
So, no offense to natives, but the cliche is not seeing a California girl toting around Joan Didion, but rather a chihuahua and a venti skinny mochachino hold the whip .More often than not, I’ll shuffle on over to Skylight Books, spend a few quiet minutes (erm, hours) poking around their stacks.
Their fiction selection is good– mostly stuff you know you’re “supposed” to read, to be a good lit nerd. Good GLBT section, arts, music, and graphic novels. Also, they had a large orange Tabby cat named Lucy that used to take adorable snoozes in the window. But it just does not have the size needed to be an absolutely outstanding alternative to shopping the Amazon used marketplace.
Can you suggest alternatives? I do both used and new, hardcover or paperback originals. Nothing can disappoint this connoisseur. Also, a place to find first editions will be needed, once I get a little more cash in the bank account!

The Iliad bookstore in North Hollywood is my favorite of the few remaining independent bookstores. All used books, with an excellent selection of literature, sci-fi, art-film-music, history, and many other topics. I always find something special in their bargain book bins as well.

Skylight is in my top 5, for sure. I also love Book Soup on Sunset and Bodhi Tree on Melrose.
I’m in Skylight a lot as well and I miss Lucy, the cat!
