Fidel Castro Steps Down From Power but Will it Change Anything

February 19th, 2008 Written by: Mali· No Comments

FidelCastro08-02-18After ruling Cuba for nearly 50 years and 634 assassinations attempts, dictator Fidel Castro will be stepping down due to an alleged illness. The most recent study done in 2003 states that during his reign he is thought to be responsible for the total of 90,827 and 102,722 deaths.

President Bush spoke from a news conference in Kigali, Rwanda today where he is vising African Nations, stating that this is a positive change and we are now entering “a period of transition and it should be the beginning of a democratic transition in Cuba.” Bush sees this as a chance to move Cuba “to free and fair elections.”

But Cuban immigrants living in Los Angeles seem to feel a little differently. Many state that they don’t think anything will change because Fidel’s younger brother Rual Castro has been running Cuba for the last year and a half and nothing has changed.

Betty Porto, whose family owns Porto’s Bakery in Glendale and Burbank, says “We’ve known now for a long time that (Fidel) Castro hasn’t been in charge, and that his brother has been making all the decisions. We don’t even known if (Fidel) Castro is alive…So you won’t see jubilation (among Cuban Americans) here because we believe Raul Castro will be the same as his brother. They’re dictators, and I’m afraid we’re not going to see any changes in Cuba.”

So will things get better? Or will things merely continue until the Castro era ends?
