I use the word “dry” to describe many things – mostly deserts, white wine and my hair. It is a versatile word with many uses, but one that should never ever be applied to cupcakes. Unfortunately, I must. My Little Cupcake’s product in Studio City is a dry cupcake.
The downside of items that are baked fresh daily is that every once in awhile you get a few that just stood out too long. I could come up with a million excuses why - and I want to because the owner is just so friendly! - but it’s my personal opinion that a $3.00 cupcake (even if made in the early morning) should still taste pretty good at 1:30pm.
This is not to say that the cupcakes were bad. Vanilla tasted like vanilla, and chocolate like chocolate. The cupcakes just weren’t remarkable. The red velvet frosting was heavy with cream cheese flavor and very good, but there was just too much of it. There was a tremendous amount of frosting on all of the cupcakes and while it was messy to eat – they certainly were pretty to look at. In fact, their entire display is reminiscent of a high-end bake sale with the cupcakes organized by flavor on fancy serving platters. A quick glance through their website and you’ll see the variety of flavors, many of which include fresh fruit and meringue.
Of the 6 cupcakes purchased (chocolate, vanilla, coconut, red velvet, strawberry and chocolate peanut butter) all except one tasted as if they’d been left to dry out in the sun. The only non-dry cupcake was the chocolate peanut butter, but we felt that was solely due to its unorthodox structure. The chocolate cupcake top is sliced off, frosted, replaced and then frosted again. It’s also extraordinarily rich in flavor and not for the weak of stomach or gumline. For those who enjoy a good Reese’s peanut butter cup – this is definitely your cupcake.
If you are in the Studio City neighborhood, My Little Cupcake is definitely worth a visit. The cupcakes are pretty and the owner friendly. For me, a woman with a lot of bakeries still to try, it may be awhile till I walk in again.
