I cannot begin to tell you how much I love IKEA. This is in line with my ongoing trend of loving all things Swedish, including H&M, ABBA, Pippi Longstocking and Sweden’s health care system. Whenever I get a chance to visit the IKEA that boldly stands in its traditional colors of royal blue and sunshine yellow at 600 N. San Fernando Blvd in Burbank, I know that in between buying furniture with names I can hardly pronounce and knickknacks I don’t really need, I will be either a) heading up to the food court to divulge in Swedish delicacies or b) shopping downstairs at the Swedish food market by the checkout isle. Yes, it’s that good.
Whenever I tell people I love IKEA food, they look at me like I just told them I like going to work on Mondays. After browsing the entire showrooms and looking at crisp, clean and put together living areas that I can only dream of, the thought of lingonberries, cream sauce and roasted potatoes at the IKEA restaurant is just too good to pass up. The Swedish meatballs are definitely heavenly on their own, but now that I have given up eating meat, I’ll be steering clear of those next time. The desserts are just as good and include mazarin, princess cake and Swedish applecake with a cup of coffee.
The food market is a treasure as well. If there’s one thing I have a fondness for, it’s European markets and delicacies and this food market, at the end of one incredibly large furniture store, satiates my appetite quite well. The food market has crispbread, rasberry candy, lingonberry sauce, the different desserts offered at the restaurants and Swedish meatballs for you to make in your very own kitchen, of course. There are also quite unusual foods at the market, including salmon paste and edelflower juice.
If you’re just there to buy Swedish furniture and not the food, there is also a a bistro chock full of good old American treats such as hot dogs, cinnamon buns and coffee. Frozen yogurt is also offered.
Any way you put it, dining at IKEA is a unique food experience and quite inexpensive as well. No high class restaurant could ever beat the down to earth and delicious dining experience at IKEA that hits the spot just right.
