TV: What to Watch This Week

February 25th, 2008 Written by: Matt Unangst· No Comments

pdiddy-08-02-23Ever wonder what’s worth watching live on TV anymore? With thousands of channels there is only a handful of things worth watching. Here is your list of new shows, exciting TV debut’s and basketball games that you should be sure not to miss!

What to Watch Live

A Raisin in the Sun (Monday, ABC, 8 PM)

Sean Combs stars in this TV movie based Lorraine Hansley’s Broadway play. The movie features much of the same cast as 2004’s Broadway revival, two of whom, Phylicia Rashad and Audra McDonald, won Tonys for their performances. The success of the revival (it was the 2nd highest grossing Broadway play in history) and Combs’ star power led to ABC green-lighting director Kenny Leon’s project to make a movie out of the play. Watch to see if Combs’ acting holds up to his other talents and the excellent reviews he received on Broadway.

Unhitched (Sunday, FOX, 9:30 PM)
The Farrelly brothers made some of the 90’s top comedies in There’s Something About Mary and Dumb and Dumber. They now make their foray into television with Unhitched, which tells the story of 4 thirty-something friends in Boston who have all recently ended long-term relationships and are now trying to go back to dating. No, it’s not an original idea, but with the Farrelly brothers in charge, it at least has a chance to be funny.

What to DVR

Quarterlife (Tuesday, NBC, 10 PM)What to Watch This Week - Quarterlife Photo

A hit on the Internet before being picked up by NBC, Quarterlife documents the lives of six friends and their emotional drama with one another. Although not the most original concept, Quarterlife promises to redefine social networking for people in their 20’s by focusing on creativity. It should at least be interesting to see how that whole experiment works out. DVR it in case it’s as awful as it seems like it might be, but watch it in case it turns out well.

Your Mama Don’t Dance (Friday, Lifetime, 9 PM)

Not wanting to get left behind in the dance show craze, Lifetime gets into the act with its new show hosted by Dancing with the Stars contestant (but not winner) Ian Ziering, who hasn’t done much since Beverly Hills 90210 ended a while back - though he did apparently audition to replace Bob Barker as host of The Price is Right, but instead wound up with this show instead. The new concept that Lifetime has added to the standard format is that each team is a father-daughter or mother-son pairing. Watch it if you are still craving more dancing, but DVR it because it is on on Friday night.

What Sports to Watch

Dallas Mavericks at San Antonio Spurs (Thursday, TNT, 5 PM)

This would have been a compelling match-up without either of these teams making the trades they made to beat last week’s trade deadline. With reinforcements Jason Kidd (Mavericks) and Kurt Thomas (Spurs) this should be even more of a battle. Dallas has struggled to defend Spurs point guard Tony Parker in recent years without Devin Harris, whom they traded away to acquire Kidd, so this game is a massive test for the new-look Mavs.

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Lakers (Sunday, ABC, 12:30 PM)

Another Mavericks game. This one should also be a huge battle. The Lakers have looked nearly unstoppable since trading for Pau Gasol a few weeks ago, but other than their big victory over Phoenix, they have mostly played the league’s chaff. This game is a chance to better gauge the Lakers’ strength against another Western Conference power and potential playoff opponent.
