The city is cracking down on it’s animal overpopulation. It is now illegal to own a cat or dog, older than 4 months that is NOT spayed or neutered. The new law was signed into effect today by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Hopefully it will help stop the number of animals being put down each year in pounds due to the overcrowding in shelters.
Last year alone, LA animal shelters took in 50,000 cats and dogs and 30% of them (15,000) were euthanized. Not only is this a horrible thing for the animals, but it’s costing our city $2 million dollars a year to euthanize these innocent animals. In the end no one wins.
Councilman Tony Cardenas is working towards a “no-kill city” and he has stated that “this is the greatest step in that direction.”
Some animals are exempt from the new law. Animals belong to professional breeders, in competitions or shows, guide dogs, and police dogs are not required to follow the new laws. This is mainly due to that fact that their breeding is tightly monitored. The average pet owners, must have their cats and/or dogs neutered by the time they are 4 months old or 6 months if they have a note from the vet.
If you break the law you will be given a 60 day period in which to comply, after that you make face a $500 fine or up to 40 hours of community service.
So get those cats and dogs neutered! It’s the law, it will save the city money, and you may just save a life (or a couple of thousand).

I am so glad to be neutered….I don’t know what I would do with 6 or 8 puppies! I hardly have enough time in the day! Maggie
