Despite the rain and the band’s cancellation, the Fort MacArthur Museum celebrated the Great Air Raid of 1942 on Saturday the 23rd of February. This was the museum’s sixth annual commemoration of this historic event.Although the band was a no show, the museum recovered nicely with some swing recordings and plenty of couples dancing under the misty night skies. Among them were my in-laws, Joan and John, who were able to show off how all those dancing lessons paid off. Since the band couldn’t be there, the museum generously reduced the cost of admission by 50 percent.
This year’s affair had a wonderful firework display during the reenactment of the air raid. There were plenty of participants dressed in vintage clothing lending an air of authenticity to the evening’s festivities. The wail of sirens, the roar of aircraft, the staccato firing of the guns and the explosion of fireworks created a memorable experience for all who attended!
