Klutch Stanaway, Drawing & Sculpture
March 6 - March 29, 2008
Preview reception: Sunday, March 2, 4-7pm
The Mars Exploration Rovers and the For Dummies book series are tools to explore our universe; Klutch Stanaway creates ad hoc abstractions of these tools to explore his. In his hands, satellites and Rovers become templates for drawings and sculptures using materials readily available from any art store or Home Depot – paper, colored pencils, plywood – combined with LCD monitors, live security cameras and mirrored Plexi-glass. But he subtly shifts values and tweaks perceptions by covering his plywood sculptures with paper painted with idealized versions of the plywood underneath. In his works on paper he further expands on a “hi-tech” world that could be built in a backyard out of simple materials. As a whole, his tongue-in-cheek works exploit the fine line between humor and awe for man’s accomplishments.
