What’s with all this cupcake nonsense? Seems like the last few years, all anybody can talk about is which cupcake place is the best. Yeah, cupcakes are great, they became a novelty, yada yada… But listen, when was the last time you had some delicately fried and frosted dough sink mercifully between your teeth? When was the last time you and your friends took a cooking-school tour of all the great DONUT places in this city of Angels? Chances are, not recently - if at all.
And when I say donut, I’m not just talkin’ KK (you know who) or old-school Winchell’s. I’m ready to bust open the gourmet donut scene here in LA so we can all take a break from eating way too much cake with frosting to eating way too much round, fried dough. With frosting.
It’s too bad that 2 of the best donuts of my life happen to have been consumed in Austin, Texas, and back east in a road side apple stand coming back from the Boston Airport, but fear not! I will save the rhapsody for another time, because we have a donut stand in LA that rivels the best of those, and if you are a UCLA student, chances are you know who I’m talking about.
Tucked on a small corner in Westwood, catty corner to the Man Bruin movie theater, sits Stan’s Donuts. Small, modest, attached to a Boba stand… Stan’s donuts might just miss your eye if you aren’t looking for it. Stan and his family have been in the same location since 1965, and in addition to baking classic donuts, like cream filled, crumb, and buttermilk bars, they serve some crazy-flavor, fully packed, indulgent donuts. I first sought them out after the store was featured on the Food Network and I believe the first one I tried was a chocolate, banana and peanut butter filled delight covered in chocolate and chocolate chips. A beautiful, misshappen mutant of a thing that looked as fat and fresh as bowl of heavy cream laden with cream puffs. That’s right, this ain’t no trendy little Sprinkles cupcake, this is a purely decadent, heavy, put-the-cops-to-shame special treat.
And what I like best about Stan’s is that they name all their donuts. On my most recent trip I bought a Homer Simpson! An oozy, bright pink, candy-coated confection straight outta Toon Town. They also have one called the Marilyn, but for the rest of the donut names (for, say, the coconut jelly, the Reeses peanut butter pocket, the chocolate cinnamon cheese danish or a dense devil’s food) well, you’re just going to have to go by and see for yourself. (Nudge nudge).
And I highly recommend visiting their website to get a peepshow preview of all the drool-worthy varieties.
Happy donut crazing!
