Late Night Food: The Waffles and the moon

TheWaffleKP080303Forget Denny’s and IHOP. Forget Toi. I’ve found your new late night, after-partying destination. The Waffle is located on Sunset, right next to The Palladium, across the street from the Cinerama Dome. You know, next to that crazy Coffee Bean.

When you wander through the front door of The Waffle, your eyes are greeted by orange and brown. And some yellow. And maybe some Burnt Sienna. A color combination designed to inspire hunger. My impression is that if you took a Waffle House out of West Texas and gentrified it, you would end up with The Waffle. Which isn’t a bad thing. It’s actually quite awesome if it’s 2 a.m. and you’re ready to get your grub on.

The menu at The Waffle is pretty extensive. There’s the usual comfort foods like Mac and Cheese or Sandwiches, as well as an entire Vegetarian section. Egg dishes include a cornbeef scramble and the usual omelet-type dish. Get a yummy biscuit with these dishes and you won’t be sorry. For dessert, grab a shake, a malt, some pudding of the day and/or a cupcake trio.

But, the waffle selection is unsurprisingly where it’s at. It’s crazy, reminding me of the martini menu at Lola’s or the pancake menu at The Griddle Cafe. Sweet choices include the Malted Belgian Waffle, the Chocolate Waffle or the Sticky Bun Waffle. For savory waffles, they offer a Cornmeal Jalapeno Waffle and a Baked-In Applewood Smoked Bacon Waffle. If you’re looking for something healthy-ish, try the Multi-Grain Waffle with fruit and yogurt (pictured above) or the Gluten-Free Waffle.

The Waffle has only been open a week but I think it’s going to make it. The food is better than average and the ambiance is retro-cool. Upstairs from the diner, there’s a bar/lounge area that pretty much rocks. Major bonus time! They serve alcohol starting at 11 am. I found the wait staff here to be attentive and friendly. The bathrooms were even clean, large and well-stocked. Yes, The Waffle would be more than satisfactory any time of day, but particularly late at night. Those Belgian waffles would soak up some serious drinkage.

I think there’s something wrong with me… I’m just not that big a fan of waffles… That being said, maybe one of their more elaborate things will do the trick for me… And why do I end every sentence in an ellipses?

How does one not like waffles? Sweet goodness with yummy things…What’s not to like! Although I do think pancakes win…but still, I’ll take the sticky bun waffle…although a waffle with fruit and whip cream is always my fav.

My fave is actually waffles with peanut butter. Sounds weird but I’m from Texas and you know how we do….
