The Lakers had another big win at Staples Center against Dallas yesterday. It marked their 42 victory, the most in the conference. The game was close the whole way and went into overtime, ending at 108-104. These two teams are among the elite in the West, and every game counts. They played as if it was like a playoff game, Kobe Bryant scoring 52, a season high for him and all players in the league. Dirk Nowitzki scored 30 points and pulled 13 rebounds, but he and the newly acquired Jason Kidd, though given an opportunity, could not close it out. Kidd had 16 points, 11 assists, and 4 steals.
Pau Gasol contributed 17 points and 14 rebounds for L.A. The Mavericks Erick Dampier had 16 points, shooting 100%, and pulled 17 rebounds. Dallas had a well rounded game, but the Laker defense was the key. Bryant said after the game, “We didn’t give them any good looks, and I think eventually that wears a team down. We really got it done on the defensive end.”
The Lakers are being chosen as the favorite to win the championship by many of the top NBA analysts. Kobe Bryant is also being chosen as the leading candidate for an MVP this season, not only by the analysts, but also the fans. It is common at Staples Center, but when the fans in other cities chant MVP for Kobe, you know it is deserving. He simply impresses all who see him. Yesterday was the 22nd time in his career he has scored 50 or more, and he is now 25th on the NBA’s all time scoring list.
In other NBA news, Houston has won 15 straight games. Even after losing Yao Ming, they continue to play well, defeating Denver 103-89. They are now the 5th seed in the West, above both Phoenix and Dallas. The Spurs beat the Nets to make it their 9th straight, edging out the Lakers in win percentage and taking the top seed in the conference. Boston continues to impress, beating Atlanta 98-88 in their 5th straight win. They are now 46-12, best in the NBA.
The Sixers come to town tonight to play the Clippers. It is now five straight loses for the Clippers and they have yet to win 20 games. After waiving veteran Sam Cassell, he will most likely join Boston tonight, in hopes of his third championship. The Clippers were set to sign Flip Murray, but he decided to sign with Indiana instead, leaving the Clippers to scramble for a point guard. Dan Dickau at 6 feet is the tallest on the roster. They recently signed Andre Barret to a 10-day contract.
